Things to know when installing an alarm:
Alarm systems with monthly fees can represent a significant expense, and not everyone's budget can cope with that burden on their household finances. Currently, there are other options to ensure your home or business is fully protected. And that's without having to keep paying fees, receiving checks at specific intervals, or control calls to verify that everything is working correctly.
Faced with this, we have the opportunity to have an alarm that we can control ourselves at all times and to which a series of add-ons can be added to increase the security of the perimeter to be monitored.
What do we need to know before installing an alarm in our home?
These are simple steps but convenient for anyone who wants to install an alarm and doesn't know where to put the sensors. Therefore, the first thing to do is to carefully inspect the house and determine which doors and windows are most accessible.
Another place to consider is the location of the alarm control panel: it could be in a visible place and near the access door, or it could be hidden from view. This part is very important, especially if add-ons such as special sensors, IP cameras, etc., are included, depending on your installation requirements (wired or wireless).
Never forget your lifestyle or that of your loved ones; you'll need to be well aware of your daily habits and browse the wide range of products. This will prevent you from wasting resources or having to rectify the installation as insufficient or impractical.
Highly recommended, in addition to an alarm, is to have a module that functions as a siren – one of the most commonly used and effective deterrents in the world of security.
As you can see, these are very simple things, but tremendously useful when installing a home alarm.
What should I consider when choosing an electronic security system?
Here are 5 important recommendations:
1.- Operational in case of power failureOur Security System must continue to operate in the event of a power failure (intentional or accidental). The most common way is for our alarm to incorporate internal backup batteries or cells that ensure the equipment functions, at least for a few hours. It is equally important that our system notifies us of both the failure and the restoration of power. Furthermore, our sensors, sirens, etc., must continue to operate in the event of a power loss so that the system remains operational in this type of situation.
We must ensure that the communication system our alarm uses to communicate externally also remains operational in the event of a power failure. If communication is via GSM radio, there is no problem, but if it is via a WiFi router, it is highly recommended to have a small SAI/UPS which keeps the electrical supply to both the alarm and the router to maintain communication.
2.- External communication with backup (DUAL)Our alarm should have, at a minimum, an alternative or backup external communication system to the main one. This means having at least two communication channels for alerts, as there should always be a complementary communication channel if the main one fails. You will find different combinations on the market: WiFi, LAN, landline, GSM, GPRS, 3G, etc. We recommend combining a wired communication channel with a wireless/radio one.
3.- Anti-inhibition protectionCommunication between sensors and the control panel, and/or the control panel and external networks, can be disabled or blocked using devices called JAMMING DEVICES. In practice, depending on the jammer used, they can completely disable our System. Therefore, when choosing an alarm system, remember to ensure it has isolated jammer detectors.
4.- Ampliable/Escalable/ActualizableIf we purchase equipment that meets the characteristics detailed in this post, it won't be the cheapest equipment on the market, which is logical. However, we must ensure that the investment made is profitable in the medium and long term. Furthermore, it should allow us to stagger the necessary expenditure in phases, if we so wish. To achieve this, it should be:
- AMPLIFIABLE: In other words, the ability to add additional anti-intrusion sensors, additional sirens, or any other module or accessory to our system at any time.
- SCALABLE: When we think about security, we shouldn't just think about intrusion. There are other events that also affect the security of our home or business, and which we can protect ourselves from: fire, flood, gas leaks, etc. It's important that our system supports these types of sensors to improve our COMPREHENSIVE security.
- UPGRADEABLE: Our security system should have a lifespan of several years. During that long period of time, advances or developments will always occur that we would like to add to our system. Therefore, it is desirable that our system has the potential to be upgraded without the need to change the entire piece of equipment.
5.- The most common way to control and configure our security system is with our mobile phone. Therefore, we must seek a system that has a mobile app allowing us to check and act at any time and place. It should include the following: Total control, easy to use and intuitive, updatable, multi-user, multi-device, multi-language.
If our system complies with the above five recommendations, you can already consider that you have a good security system. And if additionally, you manage to:
- CCTVto be able to remotely view and control what's happening in our Home, House or Business. And,
- Simple Home Automationto be able to activate/deactivate or turn on/off, wherever we are, whenever we want, any electrical appliance or connected device,
You can conclude that you have an excellent security team and are in good hands.
